American Boys Camp Overviews
Told in a scorching, first-person narrative by Jay Bonet, a rich-kid gone bad, American Boys Camp is both a unique coming-of-age story and gut-punching insight into youth crime and the criminal justice system. Huck and Holden have a new friend.
When first published, American Boys Camp was purchased by Universal Studios and pegged to be the next big thing for actor River Phoenix. Director Rob Cohen (Fast and the Furious, XXX) penned the screenplay and was ready to helm. Then, on Haloween night in 1993, Phoenix died of a drug overdose on the streets of Los Angeles. Executives at Universal put the filminto turnaround, where it languishd.
Author Jerry Sprout is a Stanford graduate who worked as a newspaper reporter and for nearly two decades with troubled teenaged boys—at the Richmond Police Department, as Research Director of the Criminal Justice Research Foundation, and as an administrator of the largest private program for Califonia's most difficult juvenile offenders.
Along with his wife Janine, he has written the Traiblazer Travel Book series, top-selling eco-guides for the the Hawaiian Islands and California. Their current publisher, Diamond Valley Company, found American Boys Camp to be as fresh today as when first penned, and decided to publish the novel in 2008.
“A tour de force. I was caught up in a practically claustrophopic way (that’s good) in Sprout’s novel.” Bill Goldstein, Sr. Editor, Charles Scribner’s Sons
“This novel is not ‘normal’ in any way. There is no question in anyone’s mind that Jerry Sprout is a wonderful writer.” Miriam Altschuler, Russel & Volkening Literary Agents
“A saga, a contemperary Catcher in the Rye..” Marilyn Beck, USA Today
“One long, fast screaming R-rated ride. Touching, vulgar, hilarious, and honest.” Bethany Jenkins, Western Book Review
